What is the Manuscript Review?

The Manuscript Review is a one-on-one manuscript consultation with novelist Utsudo: you send your manuscript, a brief synopsis and character profiles; Utsudo reads them and schedules a 1:1 online discussion, giving specific advice on plot, characters, structure and more from a commercial-publishing perspective.

Who provides this service?

Novelist Utsudo — a light novelist writing in Traditional Chinese and a novelist VTuber, with about 40 commercial print novels published, a Ministry of Culture grant, and extensive crossover experience (manga, games, audio dramas, etc.). All advice comes from years of commercial writing and publishing experience.

How much does it cost, and how much should I send?

NT$800 per 1,000 characters, estimated from your manuscript’s length. We recommend at least about 15,000 characters that reach the main plot; for slow-burn works, at least the first three chapters. For under 6,000 characters, please choose the Paid Critique instead.

Can I request a review for an unfinished or newly started work?

Yes. Unfinished manuscripts and recently started works are welcome — it’s also easier to change direction at this stage.

What do I need to prepare?

Your manuscript, a brief synopsis and character profiles; if you don’t have a full synopsis and profiles, at least include the story direction and general setting for more complete advice.

What’s the process, and what advice will I get?

After you send your materials and receive a quote based on length, Utsudo reads your manuscript and schedules a 1:1 online discussion covering professional-grade content advice, market-potential assessment, creative blind spots, and strategy for building your work, contests and submissions. The advice is a personal perspective, and you don’t have to accept all of it.

How do I request a review?

Email utsu12@gmail.com with the subject line “小說閱稿委託” plus your pen name, and include a synopsis of your work, word count and what you’d like to discuss.

Which works are not accepted?

Literary fiction, poetry, heavy military themes and excessively gory or violent content are outside the scope. Writers who can’t accept feedback, want only short-term results or aren’t willing to invest time polishing their work are also not a good fit.

How long until I get manuscript feedback?

Usually within about two weeks; the exact timing can be discussed based on your manuscript’s length and your needs.

Can you review just the first few chapters?

Yes. Reviewing only the opening or selected chapters is fine — just tell us the scope when you make your request.

Will my manuscript be leaked?

No. Your manuscript is used only for this service and never shared with any third party. If the service includes a public livestream (such as a public critique or reading), the scope of what’s shown will be confirmed with you in advance.

How soon will I hear back after sending a request?

How do I pay?

Clients in Taiwan pay by bank transfer. Once the details and quote are confirmed, Utsudo will send you the payment information.

How do I pay from outside Taiwan?

Clients outside Taiwan mainly pay via PayPal. Once the details and quote are confirmed, Utsudo will send you the PayPal payment information.

Can I pay in installments?

Yes. You can pay in installments through ECPay, or we can discuss another installment arrangement that works for you.
